How do I capture my paper receipts?

From within Digital Receipts, tap on “Capture Receipts”. For iOS 9 and above, you will default to “Automatic” capture mode, with the flash turned on by default. Arrange the receipt edges on the screen so that the whole receipt is visible. Hover
over the receipt, holding still, to give the camera time to snap the perfect receipt image for you. Avoid white surfaces so that the camera can detect the edges of the receipt.

The other camera capture mode is “Manual”. The flash will be automatically turned by default. Use the crop bar and grid lines to eliminate the background of the receipt image and ensure the receipt is straight. Tap on the receipt to focus on the receipt’s text. Tap on the circular capture button at the bottom of the screen to capture your receipt image.

How do I capture my electronic receipts?

You must first set up a personal Digital Receipts email address (ex. user@digitalreceipts.us). You can do so from the top of your receipts list, or, if you haven’t added any receipts yet, tap the “Need to capture email receipts?” link.

Simply forward the receipts from your personal email inbox to your Digital Receipts email address.

Some retailers offer to email you a copy of your receipt. You can give your Receipts email address to the cashier, and the receipt will directly be uploaded to your account. For merchants such as Uber or Lyft, you can set up your account to use your @digitalreceipts.us email address. Your receipts will automatically feed in every time you ride. If you ever forget your @digitalreceipts.us email address, you can find it at the top of the receipts list.

Can I throw my paper receipt away after I have captured it?

No, it is recommended that you still keep your paper receipts as a form of backup.

How do I capture a good quality copy of my receipt?

Receipts need to be clear and legible for the app to capture information accurately. To capture good quality copies of your receipts, hold your phone steady above a flat receipt in a well-lit area with the flash on against a dark surface. Be sure to capture the entire receipt, cropping out the background and ensuring the image is in focus and text is clear capturing the date and time. If you have a long receipt, capture the top of the receipt first and use the ‘add section’ to capture the remaining receipt.

How do I capture a long receipt in the mobile app?

For long receipts, it’s best to be in ‘Manual’ camera mode otherwise the receipt may be too far away from the camera to take a clear image with legible text:
1. Take an image of the top part of the receipt
2. Tap ‘Add Section’
3. You’ll see the first section of the receipt at the top of the screen. Now line up the next section of the receipt so that it matches and joins up with the first image
4. Tap ‘Capture’ at the bottom of the screen
5. Ensure they are seamlessly aligned by sliding the previous image capture over the new capture to meet where the previous image ended

Can I upload receipts from transactions paid in cash or with a non-participating bank card?

Organizing Receipts

What are notes in the receipt feature of the mobile app?

For each receipt, you can add free-form notes about the purchase. You can use this to keep track of who was at the group meal that you expensed, or the name of the person for whom you bought a gift. You can even enter hashtags, just like with Twitter and Instagram. Any hashtags that you used previously will start to pre-fill as soon as you type ‘#’ in the Notes
field so that you can use the same labels consistently.

What are folders? How can I use them?

Folders enable you to group related receipts together so that you can easily review them, and track the total spent for the group. For example, you may want to use folders to group all the expenses for your “Business Trip to New York”. You can easily export the entire folder of receipts when you need to process your expense report.

How can I search for my receipts?

From the receipts list, tap on the magnifying glass icon in your top-right corner. You can search by merchant, by the item name, by totals on the receipt, or even by the notes you entered about the receipt.

You can filter through your search results to find the receipts you need. Just tap on the filter icon to the right of the search bar. This reveals a list of filters that you can set to only consider receipts that meet certain criteria. If you want to find receipts within a specific folder, go into the receipts list for that folder first, and then tap on the magnifying glass within that folder.

Are digital copies of my receipts accepted by the IRS?

Yes. The IRS will accept images of documents, such as receipts. This is as long as (1) they are an accurate reproduction with the intention of replacing the original paper document, (2) it gives the same information as the paper document, and (3) the important details of the document are not obscured.

According to the IRS, for any receipts used to support statements made on your tax return, you can destroy the paper receipt provided that the image you have taken of the receipt complies with the IRS Revenue Procedure 97-22, and includes all necessary information. Be sure to check the guidelines of the country in which you are filing taxes.

How long will you keep my digital copy of the receipt?

The Digital Receipts feature will hold on to receipts for up to 3 years after you have submitted them. If you need to keep the digital record for longer, you can export the receipt from within the receipts list.

Why are some of my receipts digitally transformed and others are not?

FNB’s Digital Receipts service attempts to read and make sense of your receipts. A high-quality receipt capture makes a big difference. Here are some tips to help you snap the perfect receipt every time:

• Exhale to help hold steady, and give your phone’s camera time to focus.
• Closely crop the receipt while making sure not to crop out any key information.
• Uncrumple and uncurl your receipt and lay it down on a flat surface.
• Avoid harsh shadows and low light situations without the use of flash.
• Avoid capturing your receipt over vividly patterned surfaces or where other pieces of text are visible.

The Digital Receipts system is continuously training to understand more than just the key receipt information of merchant name, date, and total. Receipts tries to understand the store information, item details, subtotals, taxes and payment methods, and even reward and loyalty point balances. Whenever Digital Receipts is confident that it can understand this level of information, it will transform your receipt capture for more clarity in an enhanced receipt format. You can always swipe or tap back to view the original image of the receipt.
